Robyn Jeffords
Robyn Jeffords watched 3 of her 5 children struggle with school, despite being bright, vibrant, engaging and creative in other aspects of their lives. It turns out that those three children, all of whom she is very proud, are dyslexic.
In 1987 she knew very little about dyslexia, and her local school knew even less. She was determined to learn everything she could to help her child read. She read books, went to seminars and met with professionals in the field.
Everything in her quest pointed to Orton Gillingham.
Robyn enrolled in a class at a state university to learn the Orton-Gillingham Approach, and her daughter began to read. Eventually two more of her children were identified as dyslexic, despite the fact that one of them had flown under the radar until she was well into her college years.
It was her passion to help her own children that led to years and years of research and an understanding of what causes kids to struggle with reading, and why it looks so different from one child to another. Before long, she was helping other families with their struggling learners.
It was the look of desperation in the eyes of parents who were searching for help for their dyslexic children, along with her desire to make a difference in the lives of kids who were caught in a system that wasn’t working for them, that inspired opening of The Achieve More Reading Center.
Achieve More was birthed out of our passion to help students learn to read – dyslexia or not! We knew that we could make life easier for these kids if we could give them a different way to learn – a way that not only worked but was fun and engaging, too. That “different way” isn’t new at all, it is and has been the Gold Standard for years.
Robyn grew up on a horse farm in rural Wisconsin, getting her first taste of teaching at age 14. She taught horseback riding lessons for many years, working primarily with youth. Eventually she moved from horse show arenas to the world of ballroom and country dancing – who would have seen that coming?! After years of teaching dance, dancing competitively and coaching youth and adults on the competition floor, she switched gears to pursue work in children’s ministry. Robyn is mother of five, an avid reader and a self-proclaimed “word nerd.” She enjoys football, coffee shops, and writing.
